Religious 33: The 2 endgames
Eph 5:11:"…have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”. Amos 3:7 “…God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.”
Why this post?
Because the devil is not improvising. He does not have a hundred schemes — he has two errors, and the prophets named them in advance. Ellen White put it in one sentence: “Through the two great errors, the immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions. The former lays the foundation of spiritualism, the latter creates a bond of sympathy with Rome” (Great Controversy, 588).
Two errors. Two endgames. And each one unfolds in four stages. If you can see the stages, the moves can’t surprise you.
The 1st endgame — spiritualism via aliens
It stands on a single lie, the oldest one ever told: “Ye shall not surely die” (Genesis 3:4). Pull that lie out — see that the dead are asleep, knowing nothing (Ecclesiastes 9:5; Psalm 146:4) — and every manifestation below loses its key to the door. The state of the dead is the firewall. With the lie in place, as I wrote here, the manifestations arrive in rising order of authority:
Stage 1 — the aliens (read this)
How do you deceive a world that no longer believes in religion? Not with an angel — with a spaceship. “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). Ellen White saw it in the only vocabulary she had: “heathen deities… will manifest their signal power, and will exhibit themselves before the cities of the world” (Evangelism, 705). The religious man sees an angel. The secular man sees a visitor from another world. Same entity. Different costume.
Stage 2 — the dead (read this)
Then the dead come back — your mother, your child, “ministering spirits” carrying private knowledge only the departed could hold. “Should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?” And the answer: “To the law and to the testimony” (Isaiah 8:19-20; Deuteronomy 18:10-12). They are not the dead. They are familiar spirits — and they come teaching that the Sabbath has been changed (GC 551, 560).
Stage 3 — the saints
Then the revered dead — apostles, Mary, the canonized — “The apostles, as personated by these lying spirits” and made to “contradict what they wrote” (GC 557). Fatima, Lourdes, Medjugorje: the same orbs, dressed in Catholic language. This is the bond with Rome forming through the eye, not the argument.
Stage 4 — Satan as Christ
And the crowning act: “Satan himself will personate Christ” — a being of dazzling brightness, claiming to have changed the Sabbath, demanding worship (GC 624). The test that holds: he appears in glory in one place after another; the true Christ comes visibly, to all, at once — “For as the lightning cometh out of the east… so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Matthew 24:23-27).
When Satan manifests, you might be unsure, but when Jesus comes, no one will doubt.
The 2nd endgame — the Sunday law
This one moves by legislation, and the prophets gave its four stages with the same precision:
Stage 1 — refrain from working on Sunday
Blue laws. Close the shop. No commerce. (9T 232-233; CT 550-551.) This is at the door — Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation’s 2026 “universal day of rest.” It looks like rest. It feels reasonable. That is exactly the point.
Stage 2 — honor Sunday, Sabbath worship still allowed
(GC 608.) The law turns from passive rest to enforced honoring of the day — a national recognition of Sunday’s sacredness, church and state joining hands to form “an image to the beast” (Revelation 13:14-15). You can still keep the Sabbath. For now.
Stage 3 — Sunday only; fines and imprisonment
(GC 607.) Now Sabbath worship is forbidden, and the screw turns economically: “that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark” (Revelation 13:17). This is the boycott — the very “can’t buy a shovel” made law. And in my view programmable money is the vehicle to enforce it.
Stage 4 — the death decree
(Revelation 13:15-17; GC 604, 621, 635.) A decree against those who keep the Sabbath and disregard Sunday. It is issued at the climax, before probation closes; its appointed execution falls in the time of Jacob’s trouble, during the plagues — and there, before the sword falls, God delivers His people.
Where the two endgames meet
Here is what most miss. They are not two separate endings. They climax together. Walk the final cascade: National Sunday law → image to the beast → the mark → sealing → Satan personates Christ → national ruin → the death decree. The false christ — the climax of the first error — arrives in the same breath as the death decree — the climax of the second. And he comes to endorse the false sabbath. The two great errors fuse into one moment. That is why John saw three unclean spirits go out together — the dragon (spiritualism), the beast (Rome), the false prophet (apostate Protestantism) — “to gather them to the battle of that great day” (Revelation 16:13-14).
Underneath both lies one question, and only one. Two signs are on the table. The Sabbath, which God Himself called “a sign between me and you” — His seal (Ezekiel 20:12, 20:20). And Sunday — the mark. Whom do you obey?
But knowing is not the same as being saved
Here is the warning beneath the warning. Seeing these things unfold will not save you. Knowledge is not the seal.
The devils have perfect prophetic knowledge — “the devils also believe, and tremble” (James 2:19). The five foolish virgins had lamps, had the truth, had the right doctrine; they lacked only the oil — and the door shut on people who knew exactly what hour it was (Matthew 25:1-13). And to those who prophesied in His name, He will say, “I never knew you” (Matthew 7:21-23).
Scripture says they perish because they “received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved” (2 Thessalonians 2:10) — not the facts of the truth. The love of it. That is why the seal is set in the forehead (Revelation 7:3; 14:1) — not the hand. It is not a fact you carry; it is a settled character, the truth made so fully your own that nothing left to come can move you.
Knowing the Sabbath is right is not the same as keeping it. Knowing the dead are asleep is not the same as being hid in Christ when the false christ comes in glory. The map is not the territory. The lamp is not the oil.
This is the whole burden of the final verse: “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:12). The commandments — that answers the second endgame; they keep His Sabbath. The faith of Jesus — that answers the first; they will not bow to a counterfeit christ, because they already have the real One. Both errors undone in a single verse — but only for those in whom it has become a life, and not a list.
And God did not leave us without a countermove
That verse does not stand alone. It is the close of a message — three of them — that Heaven sends out while the devil runs his two errors: the three angels of Revelation 14.
The first angel cries with a loud voice, “Fear God, and give glory to him… and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters” (Revelation 14:6-7) — which is the fourth commandment’s own words: “for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea” (Exodus 20:11). A call back to the Creator, and to His day. The second angel: “Babylon is fallen” (14:8) — come out of her. The third: the sharpest warning in all of Scripture against worshipping the beast, and his image, and taking his mark (14:9-11).
See what lies underneath it all. Both endgames are a single war — over worship. The beast demands it (Revelation 13:15); the false christ counterfeits the One who alone deserves it. And against both, God’s final message to the world is one word: worship the Creator — on His day, through His Son. That is the whole controversy, in miniature.
whydoneit?
Because “the final movements will be rapid ones” (9T 11) — and a man who has seen the stages is not afraid of the next move. The firewall against the first endgame is the state of the dead. The shield against the second is the seventh-day Sabbath. And the name over both — the name that stops every counterfeit cold — is the name of Jesus Christ, “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow” (Philippians 2:10).
He told us. He always tells us. The only question left is — are we watching?
